Qin Shihuangdi, the first emperor of China, in ~230 BCE built a huge complex in Xi'an for him to live in the afterlife. One area of the complex housed 8,000 life-size warriors made of terracotta clay. The figures were assembled from different pieces, fired, painted, and placed into position. Each warrior has a different face and different expression. The diversity of features is remarkable and makes them look all the more lifelike. The Franklin Museum in Philadelphia exhibited many warriors and diverse artifacts found at the site in Xi'an.
