Hotel Broezel

The Hotel Broezel stood at Seneca and Wells Street (roughly between Washington and Michigan), a block or two from the original New York Central Station on Exchange Street. When the new Central Terminal opened in 1929, the area around the closed train station withered and died, with many businesses closing shortly thereafter. Wells Street itself disappeared with the construction of the I-190 Elm Street Exit.

On September 17, 1913, the neighboring Dirnberger Popcorn Company caught fire, with the fire quickly spreading to the Broezel, with the third, fourth, and fifth floors being totally engulfed. Fortunately, there were no deaths, with the Broezel suffering over $150,000 in damage. It was rebuilt, and continued as a hotel into the 1930's.
