Transfiguration RC Church

929 Sycamore St. Buffalo

The parish was founded in 1893, with construction of this building beginning in 1896, and completed in 1897. Closed in 1993. This majestic old church is in serious disrepair, windows broken out, roof tiles falling away; vandals have chipped away at the cornerstone. Overall it is probably beyond salvage, and it's time is not long.

This is the parish my mother grew up in. It was all Polish. The nuns were Felician, and they didn't begin to learn English until third grade. The girls were taught separately from the boys... They used to have a beautiful Easter set up, with the tomb of Christ set up on the alter. It was one of the "seven Churches" to go to on Holy Thursday. How very sad to see it this way.

Well, the roof has been patched, and all window openings are covered. At the very least, the structure looks secured from the weather.

Announced in the Buffalo News on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, this church has been sold by the diocese. The new owner(s) have applied for permits and have been approved to repair the roof, seal the building and begin repairs to the structure in preparation to convert it to a sort of community center. Let's hope it happens, like the rebirth of the Asbury Delaware church. It's a crime for these beautiful old buildings to disappear!
