Plan A was to build a church on top of the "basement". The funds were never available so it was forever known as the only church in the diocese where one had to walk DOWN the stairs to enter it. Elinor Malone Rice St. James School, class of 1956

Do you know why they never built the church any larger? The basement footprint is so much larger than the church. Was a larger church planned at one time? Thanks

Some people referred to St. James as the Church in the Basement, as you went downstairs to enter. I was baptized & made my First Communion at St. James & attended St. James from 1st to 6th grade (late 50's & early 60's). I loved that school and the walk home past the Ken show, Candy store & the entire Baily-Kensington neighborhood. Does anyone remember Wunsches Deli or Mama Rosa's on Kensington? Thanks for ALL the great pictures & memories.
