Along coastal Delaware, from Cape Henlopen to the Maryland border are 11 towers built during WWll and were officially called Fire Control Towers; not fire meaning burning or flaming, but rather directing gun batteries of where and what to bombard.

After 70 years of remaining empty and unused, they have colloquially become known as the Ghost Towers.
Originally, there were 15 built along Delaware’s coast, and 4 on New Jersey’s coast. Four of Delaware’s towers and two of New Jersey’s were demolished through the years. The majority of Delaware’s towers are easily viewable from Cape Henlopen State Park, formerly Fort Miles, where the gun batteries were located. The rest are viewable along Coastal Highway (Route 1). One in Cape Henlopen State Park is open to the public to climb and view.
