"Shangri-La" is a fictional place described in the 1933 novel "Lost Horizon" by British author James Hilton.
After China was opened to western tourism and business, a number of regions competed to claim that name as their own.
The region that won is driving distance from Lijiang in the Tibetan foothills. It includes the Ganden Sumtseling monastery and the beautiful Baishui Terrace region, Zhongdian and Napahai highlands.
