In the first days of March, the city of Roi Et offers a great 3 day festival, with parade, light and sound show, and a last day of ribald reveling taking Brueghelian proportions at time. Called the BUN PHAWET festival, it is both Buddhist merit-making celebration and re-enactment of events in a previous life of the Buddha, as told in the JATAKA tales. This fair is of Lao inspiration, rather than thai, as often in ISSAN, my favorite region in my favorite country in the world.
