San Gimignano. View from the top of Torre Grossa

Torre Grossa is the highest tower of San Gimignano (hence the name) and is located in Piazza del Duomo, next to the new Palazzo del Podesta. It was exactly that began on August 21, 1300, four months after the city hosted Dante Alighieri, and was finished in 1311. It is 54 meters high and the only one, along with the twin towers of the herbs square on which is permitted ' access to the public.
DescriptionThe tower rests on a step and has turned, like all the other towers of San Gimignano, square base. The facing is exposed stone, cut into very regular drafts. On the summit, which offers a beautiful view of town and surrounding countryside, there is a belfry, surrounded by a walkway protected by the parapet resting on hanging arches. the cell coverage is pyramidal and is reminiscent of the nearby Rognosa tower.

Great aerial composition of this village. The white building really stands out against all the similar colored roof tops. V.
