Huun-Huur-Tu

The music of Huun-Huur-Tu is veiled in a sort of mystery, which is felt both in their concerts and their recordings. The band has devoted themselves to learning old songs and melodies, and their shows reflect both the value of innovation and of tradition. TUVA is a name of a region in central Asia, remote from any civilization. The Tuva Republic is a part of the Russian Federation. Tuva culture resembles the Mongolian tradition in its deep respect for nature. The music bears a ritual character – meditative/contemplative passages are based on strong rhythmic structures.
Throat singing, a technique not comparable with anything, presented by the HUUN-HUUR-TU, originally developed by the inhabitants of the steppes, is one of the most fascinating vocal techniques. It allows the singer to emit up to three sounds simultaneously. The songs are accompanied on traditional instruments. Their performances in the USA, where they were invited for cooperation by Kronos Quartet, Frank Zappa, The Chieftains and L. Shankar, became an instant success.
