During the panic of 1893, the Pullman Company cut wages but didn't cut rents in the
company town, owned by George Pullman, where the workers lived. On May 11, the workers
went on strike. Federal troops arrived, leading to violence (34 dead) but ending the strike.

In an effort to conciliate organized labor after the strike, President
Grover Cleveland and Congress designated Labor Day as a federal holiday.
