The control tower is brand new. It has been open only a few months. I believe that the powers in Galveston really wanted to get it opened to attract bigger airplanes and perhaps commercial service. A number of cruise ships sail from Galveston, so having a local airport to bring in customers would make sense. There is also quite a bit of helo traffic for the offshore oil production platforms.
