The day started with a visit to the Mauna Loa macadamia nut factory. We really like macadamia nuts. Turns out the factory tour was just looking in a few windows at the packaging line. Not very interesting. The main attraction was a big shop where you could buy lots of varieties of macadamia nuts (who woulda thunk?)
We hit the Lyman Museum in town. This guy David Lyman was a missionary who arrived in the 1830s. He built a big frame house (uncommon in Hawaii at the time) and set about his business. Like so many other missionaries, he got into business and he and his family did very well.
We took a drive down south of Hilo where all the lava flows occurred last year. It would have been nice to see the lava in action, but that was all over with. Today's photo is of the recent flow which was eating up a sidewalk.
