March 1, 2019

In order to keep my Inspection Authorization valid, I have to attend 8 hours of training every year and get my license signed off by the FAA every two years in March. During those sign off years there is usually a renewal symposium where you can get your training as well as getting the FAA to sign you off. This year I went to a seminar held at MIAT College of Technology up near the airport. It was more interesting than usual because in addition to the class lectures, there were demonstrations on the simulators the Institute uses in its programs. It is always cool to see real stuff. In today's photo the instructor is demonstrating fire detectors which are used on big jets. I had never seen this stuff for real before. Very enlightening. I also got to give it a try with the blow torch. Very cool.

No. That is old school.
The academy now recommends the symbiotic
Fuegoscopic detector.

Is that a fratostat-activated extinguisher?
