Since Bloke's communications capabilities were not satisfactory, I led with the Swift and we did a formation flight over to Sugarland on the west side of Houston. It was about a 45 minute flight. We took the long way around to the South because of the Class B Houston terminal area. Easy flight and a formation landing to finish off. After topping the fuel tanks, we taxied over to Solapp Avionics and Mike came out to have a look. He was baffled. We took the unit inside and tested it and found that it was in perfect working order. Hmmmm. So we stood around on the ramp discussing the situation. We stood around long enough such that the sun was setting as you can see in this photo. We taxied out to take off, and Bloke was having radio problems with his other radio. (Aside-he quickly found that when you hook up the antenna it works a lot better). He had no communications when I called tower for a takeoff clearance. A few hand signals and we were airborne. Our formation training paid off. Once airborne he connected the antenna and we were off for home. This was a magnificent flight. The sun was setting as we departed and I looked back and saw Bloke's airplane perfectly silhouetted in the setting sun. Very cool. I couldn't get a photo because I was busy flying and navigating. We got back to LaPorte and landed in the dark. Once the airplanes were back in the hangar, we sat in front of the hanger drinking beer and wondering what to do tomorrow. It seems to me that there is no better way to end a day of adventure than sitting in front of that hangar drinking beer. But, remember, I am easily amused.
