Little Estero Island Critical Wildlife Area
Estero Lagoon
Fort Myers Beach, Florida USA

I met Frank, from Quebec, whom told me he was shooting with a Nikon D300
and 600mm lens on the tripod. He said he's been birding for a couple years.
I failed to inquire of him what was on his shoulder (note it's powered on). I overheard a fellow
guest to the venue ask Frank why he had his gear set on VR with it on the tripod and he
pointed out a setting on the lens which negated the feature. Frank had his camera directed
toward a Long-billed Curlew which we were both observing for the first time.

In looking at this image again after nearly a year (14 DEC 2009), I see that Frank
is shooting portrait style which I hadn't noticed before. I'll have to ask him about that
and why he wasn't in the water when I see him again.
---

I just heard from Frank (DEC 2010) indicating that he will be in the SW Florida area to start
the 2011 year. If you haven't seen his awesome work, be sure to do so here . . .

Frank could have been shooting without locking his setup firmly which makes sense of using the VR. It's not easy to handhold something this heavy for extended periods of time so you place it on a tripod but you don't lock it if you want to follow a quickly moving subject or there's enough light (as it seems to be the case) to obtain short shutter speed. Just a guess since my heaviest is a Canon 40D plus Canon 100-400, but I can imagine I wouldn't use the lens I see in the picture without support unless stalking some "prey" in the woods.
