Gate to Avalon, Stony Brook

Avalon Park and Preserve consists of an 8 acre park and a 76 acre preserve. It is owned and operated by the Paul Simons Foundation, a charitable organization set up by billionaire hedge fund manager James Simons in memorial to his deceased son who suffered an untimely death in 1996 at the age of 34 when he was hit by an automobile while riding a bicycle. The park surrounds a pristine goose pond that attracts a great variety of water fowl. Wood bridges, wood benches and a stone sculpture called the Labyrinth are a few the other attractions. The preserve is a tract of fields and forests with a network of hiking paths.
