Snow Flea (Springtail sp.)

Despite their name, these wingless creatures are not fleas at all and are entirely harmless to people and pets. Instead, they are a species of springtail of the order Collembola that may occur in very large numbers on the snow on mild, sunny days. Typically less than a millimeter long, they are less noticeable during the warmer months when they inhabit leaf mold, damp soil, tree bark, decaying logs and fungi.

You can really see their distinctive outline here. Nice one!
