The Little Kitten - August 16, 2011

Yesterday morning this little kitten arrived at the veterinary hospital where I work.
We had seen him the day before.
The people who brought him in had found him in a puddle in their backyard during the horrible rain we had here on Sunday. They had dried him and offered some food and the little guy seemed to be doing ok when the doctor checked him out on Monday morning.
Even though he was very young he was able to eat on his own.
He was sent home on some meds for goopy eyes and we all hoped he would be ok.
He already had several people willing to take him if he survived.
When his owner called Tuesday morning to say something was the matter with him, we had her bring him right down. When they arrived the kitten was taking agonal breaths and very close to death.
The doctor was very surprised that the kitten had gone downhill so quickly.
He told the owner he didn’t know if he could save him but was willing to try one thing if she wanted to leave him with us.
He would not charge her but we would let her know if the kitten survived.
The owner agreed and left.
We took the little six ounce kitten in the back and started to work on him.
The doctor gave him some dextrose directly in a vein and we watched a miracle occur.
The agonal breathing stopped and he seizured for a short time and then he started breathing normally.
The doctor put a tiny tube down his throat and put some food in his stomach.
He was then placed on a heating pad and allowed to rest.
Throughout the day yesterday we repeated the feeding procedure.
While he did not wake up he responded to us holding and stimulating him every so often.
When I went home at lunch yesterday I brought my camera back to work with me.
The following photos are of this little one sleeping the day away.
The doctor took him home last night to continue to tube feed him.
I am off today and tomorrow but I had to call to see if he made it through the night.
He is back at work today and they are going to try to bottle feed him.
With any luck and some good thoughts sent his way, he will make it.

The second set of photos in this gallery starts with "Back In Our Hands" and shows the little kitten one week after he arrived at the animal hospital.
He was sent home with his family who are doing a wonderful job of caring for him.
As you can see he is doing very well!
We will have him here at the animal hospital for a few days while the family is away.
Thank you all for your kind thoughts and well wishes for him.

The last set of photos starts with "All Tucked In".
Soggy arrived on Monday, February 12, 2012, to be neutered.
He had grown so much!
His family reports that he is a little love.
We agree.
He was so sweet and happy for us to hold him.
His fur is so soft it feels like you are petting a bunny when you touch him.
He couldn't figure out why I keep putting the teacup next to him but he was very calm and accepted what ever we did.
He shares his home with another cat and a dog and gets along beautifully with everyone.
We are so happy Soggy and his wonderful family found each other!
