Was Spaniard DeSoto Near Now-Jacksonville, Ga. At 1540?

The great Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto and his entourage advance to an Indian camp at c. 1540. Some historians have tried to trace DeSoto's path through Georgia. While not certain, it is now thought by some that DeSoto's route took him toward the area of now-Jacksonville, Ga. (See article No. 434.) NOTE: It is also a great possibility that the same area was inhabited by an old Spanish mission about the early 1600's named Santa Isabel. The Fernbank Museum of Natural History continues with these projects.
