General Jackson And Close Advisors

General Jackson got out of bed with a bad wound (see arm in red sling) to meet with John R. Coffee of Tenn. to discuss battle plans for fighting the Indians. To the left of Coffee in buckskins is David Crockett (later called Davy), and Dr. Charles McKinney, with medical pouch. Crockett later served in Congress with General John E. Coffee of Jacksonville, Ga. The General Coffees were first cousins. NOTE: We are told the figure in the white pants is NOT General John R. Coffee but Sam Houston. However, the picture would make sense the other way, too, because John R. Coffee was much closer to Andrew Jackson than Sam Houston. In fact, they were related through marriage and Coffee and Jackson once owned a general store together. Also, John R. Coffee saved the life of Jackson on at least two occasions.

It could very well be Sam Houston. I have a picture of a marker that was erected beneath the big oak tree, marking the location of the gathering place of Jackson, Houston, Crockett, etc. on their way to Horseshoe Bend. The marker is near the Elk River, in Lincoln County, TN.
