Bobcat, MB05 Pond

Given all the time I spend in the field, I encounter bobcats rather frequently, but not often out in the open.
This one walked by and didn't see me concealed in the grass near a pond, waiting for dragonflies, but
it did hear me turn on the camera; it stopped and turned to look, then took off. I got only this one shot.

Location: Monte Bello, near MB05 pond, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Clara County, California.

Bobcats and coyotes are common in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains -- they're partly diurnal and I see them frequently. What I don't see are badgers, although I often see where badgers have torn into underground tunnels in their pursuit of gophers, so I'm sure they're common, but they're strictly nocturnal. And I don't see mountain lions, although I have seen spoor, scat and, on three occasions in the past five years, "lion kills," ie, deer carcasses, dismembered, and with entrails ripped out (twice at Sobey Pond, once at Horseshoe Lake). The mountain lion is my #1 target species to photograph in the wild.
