This beautiful church was dedicated in 1874 and is the oldest church in St. Paul. The beautiful German Romanesque revival structure was built of local limestone between 1869 and 1873 by a German Catholic parish. The church was modeled after the Ludwigskirche in Munich and designed by Joseph Reidl, a court architect for the ruling Wittelsbach family in Germany. At the time of dedication in 1874, the new church was criticized as being too plain for Victorian tastes. Although the surrounding area has changed, Assumption Church looks just as it did at the time of dedication.
