2nd Place
By the Caen Canal, July 1944. Fremiet

Washington D C

Working at night as the allies attack, resistance members, male and female, of all ages often operating alone, work to support the allied effort.

(W C Vandenberg....The concept of the image came to me when MFC came up with the candlelight idea. I have a great interest in WWII and especially the Normandy campaign. The first image that popped into my mind was of a resistance fighter reading a map by candlelight in carrying out a mission. So, I thought, why not try some kind of re-enactment of this. There is a canal in DC...the C and O canal a bit reminiscent of the Caen canal...so I thought that should be the context. You may recall that July 1944 was when the British intensified their assault on Caen...so the idea began to take shape. In this study I kept PS to an absolute minimum....just the searchlights and the distant fires...though it took a bit of work to get it right with such little light)

Your intriguing title caught my eye, Fremiet. I've been able to read and post comments and see a FEW thumbprints, but no enlargements. Hope to get the computer fixed soon enough to participate in the comment phase of the challenge. Your love of history has given us some amazing images. Bev

This is really rather a stunning image. Great exposure, composition. I'm kind of speachless. Could you please explain in more detail what exactly we're looking at? Is it a reenactment? A diorama? What? W C Vandenberg
