Amazing Athelete

Challenge 74 - Character Study
or
Challenge 14 - Movement
Challenge 86 - Sweat

The Peachtree Road Race is a 10K, 6.2 mile, course. Standing on the sidewalk at the 4 1/2 mile mark I saw many amazing athletes. To me, this one was the most amazing of all.

His name is Mark Greenley. He is a quadriplegic. Besides that, why do I think he's the most amazing athlete of all?

To tackle the course in a wheelchair is amazing in itself. But of all the wheelchair athletes Mark did not come in first or the top tier. In fact he was dead last. He finished just before the sweeper van would have picked him up as all wheelchair athletes must be off the course when the runners finish.

There's no fame or glory for Mark. There's no winners prize for Mark. There is only the satisfaction that he could try and that he did. And he's done it 9 times!

Nice going, Mark! Even though he is in a wheelchair, he is still living his life normally! It's unfortunate that people let their fears and problems get in the way with their dreams.

Wow. What a story. It makes one stop and consider just how lucky one is and realize how courageous and brave others are. An excellent capture of the look of determination on his face. Bravo - to Mark and to you. Jim H.

Hey Mikey - Nope, I did mean Quadriplegic! Mr. Greenley suffered a Christopher Reeves type of injury from a motorcycle accident. He's lost use of both his legs and his triceps in his arms. He does have partial arm motion but not complete and, therefore, officially qualifies as a quad. I had your same thoughts until I read an article about him in the Atlanta paper.
