RAF Abingdon

Some of 565 Squadron ATC posed in front of a SEPECAT Jaguar at RAF Abingdon where the Aircraft Maintenance Squadron's Jaguar Maintenance Unit was located. That's me centre back row. It was at Abingdon that we regularly flew dual in the de Havilland Chipmunks of the Oxford University Air Squadron's 6 AEF (Air Experience Flight). I still have my 3822 log book detailing all my flights along with the regular jaunts to the Ministry of Defence's Pirbright Ranges to shoot the .303 Lee Enfield No.4.

As a sad side-note, when it was decided by the Labour Government to retire the still very capable (and in some features unique) Jaguar aircraft for PR/cost cutting reasons, and 6 Squadron of RAF Coningsby, the last operational Jaguar squadron, were disbanded on May 2007, it ended the life of the longest continuously serving squadron in the world (93 years). The squadron officially reformed as a Typhoon squadron on 6 September 2010 at RAF Leuchars.
