An author reflects, Shanghai, China, 2006

I was so happy to capture another side of my friend and fellow pbase photographer, Kal Khogali, at the party celebrating the launch of his first book, "Beyond the Seen". The Kal I usually see, always has a camera before his eyes. He moves ever so quickly. His eyes are so sharp that he usually makes his images before people even realize he has photographed them, and before other photographers can even begin to recognize the significance of the moment. I shot this just before Kal made a brief speech about his book. For once, he seems to be responding to a moment reflectively, instead of intuitively. Congratulations, Kal -- I hope this is the first of many more books of photographs to come.

****A superb study of a man in a moment. You abstract Kal through light and vantage point, allowing us to enter his thoughts, instead of dwelling on his appearance. You also speak of his humility -- with bowed head and thought-laden gesture, he seems reluctant to acknowledge his own brllliance, which you symbolize in the golden glow behind him. A magnficent portrayal of a sublime artist, as only another magnificent artist could render it.

Yes, a great portrait! Thanks for that, for the image and the words.

A wonderful look at the contemplative and reflective side of our friend, Kal. I knew it to be there from reading his comments and thoughts on pbase, now there's photographic evidence! Now, with his wonderful book in hand, I can instantly turn to a moment that illustrates his intuitive and passionate side. Thanks, Jen, for giving us all this moment.

! Thanks Jen for being there and for the moment in this image (oh! and for hiding my face...as I like to Ha!Ha!). You are my inspiration, and your words are a true refelction of your kindness and humanity....I don't take pictures with other people, but with you, always again and again. The greatest portrait of me ever taken...me as I see myself ;-))K

I'm back to see this and realised that you added the commentary. Now you got a great introduction of a great photographer :-) You too, Jen, are great.

Wonderfully done, Jen. I like the way you chose to position, abstract and capture his body language and his hand expression, as they speak to us even without seeing his face. The warm moody light made it a beautiful frozen moment that I'm sure Kal would love it. A great impression of a great author :-)
