The Grain Warehouse in the oldest building in the Graslei (12th-13th centuries) is also the oldest building in Ghent.

The city of Ghent had the right to claim a quarter of all the grain being transported along the
Schelde or the Leie rivers. This was then stored here for a week or two and sold at a later date.
