Nicotine sooths

Travnik, Bosnia

I've never smoked, but in a war it's obvious that nicotine is a useful drug. Anybody under stress craves it. The price of cigarettes goes sky high when the going gets nasty. I know some photographers, such as Chris Morris, who smoke in combat but not otherwise. Kurt was a non-smoker and a vegetarian. The restaurant staff at the Holiday Inn in Sarajevo did an admirable job in making sure that Kurt was properly nourished, despite the lack of variation in available food.

The man at the far end is General Mehmed Alagić, CO of Bosnian Army 7th Corps in Travnik (previously part of the 3rd Corps from Zenica). He had the notorious PR assistant, Raza, probably the most feared female soldier in the Bosnian Army.

After the war Gen Alagić became the mayor of Sanski Most and died of heart attack shortly afterwards
