1965 - Mary Ann Knight and Don Boyd

Ft. Lauderdale beach, Florida

On one of our first beach dates pretending we belonged with the Jaguar XKE. She was my favorite high school girlfriend and my date for my senior prom later in 1965.

There was something really special and magical about this year in my life that has never been duplicated again. This photo really reminds me of that really wonderful year and that's why it is the cover photo for this gallery. It was a combination of being a senior in high school, not having too many worries except for the escalating Vietnam War, being more free from parental control than ever, and last but certainly not least, dating this wonderful girl who I was too scared to ask out despite her sitting at the same table as me in a chemistry class. I couldn't envision a nicer girl to take to my senior prom and I still couldn't muster the courage to ask her so I told a buddy named Joey Kuca about my predicament. He sat behind her in an auditorium class and he told her that I was interested in taking her to the senior prom. A day or two later she mentioned it to me and I said that customarily girls and guys went out on dates to know each other prior to the prom and asked her if that was okay with her. She agreed and I was ecstatic and we had many good times on numerous dates for the rest of 1965. (to be continued someday)

Hi Ron, thank you for posting. You're off a couple of years on the ages; I was 17 and Mary Ann was 16 at the time. I turned 18 a month after graduation in June. We had a great spring and summer but in the fall I started junior college and she was a senior back at the high school and we kind of grew apart, unfortunately. I wish that hadn't happened but evidently it wasn't in God's plan for the two of us. I still hold her in high regard though because she was the central character, and the highlight of, the best year of my life.

Yes, the photos are still in good shape because they have been in air-conditioning and in dark boxes for the vast majority of time since they were taken.

No, I'm not a celebrity at all nor do I want to be. Boyd Anderson High was named after Broward county's third county judge. Nothing is named for me except for a dip in a taxiway/taxilane pavement near the former Eastern Airlines base at Miami International Airport. It's called the "Boyd Bump" because I discovered that if you drive over it at a certain speed in certain ramp vehicles you can become airborne with all four wheels off the ground for a second or two. Only some of the old-timers still at MIA know about it though. : )

I am not the average person when it comes to photos. I've taken a lot of photos over the years and I wish I took a lot more, especially of Mary Ann and other good friends in my life. I've been adding the personal photos for about 12 years and aircraft photos on my other site for a year or two longer. I have about 18,000+ photos on both sites and I have probably forty or fifty times that amount yet to add. I would rather have the photos on the net for people to see for decades than have them sit in boxes unseen by anyone only to be thrown out some year down the road by my grandkids or great grandkids. A lot of historical photos taken by people my age and older are ending up in the trash instead of being scanned for the enjoyment of many and to help keep history accurate, and that is a real shame.

Thank you again for posting your comments. : )

Landed upon your photos while doing a search for South Florida Roads from the 70's.
I wound up scrolling through many of your photos, before I knew it, nearly 2 hours have elapsed LOL.
Well; I guess you didn't marry Mary Ann Knight, shes very pretty young gal.
Im guessing you two were in your late teens 18-19 in this photo(s).
I noticed the FPL Meter in the background.. wow. Your photos have been well preserved over the years.

Are you some sort of Florida celebrity? Boyd Anderson School have something to do with your name?
I ask because its not very common for average person to post soo many personal photos over a global network..

All the same thank you for sharing your memories Mr Boyd

No, things didn't work out in that direction but it was really nice while it lasted.
