Paula Stern

Paula Stern works in Washington, D. C. and in the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts. Her subject matter - figures, busts and groups - reflect her deep appreciation of the beauty and complexity of human anatomy and relationships. She creates portraits of adults and children, often using a sequence of sculptures to chronicle human lives and family groups like chapters of a biography. Stern's sculptures convey an appreciation of underlying structure, the beauty of movement, and athleticism. This echoes her lifelong experience in dance.
Prominent journalists, attorneys, and government officials including a United States federal court judge have commissioned Stern to sculpt their portrait busts as well as figures and busts of loved ones. Her sculptures are found in some of the finest homes and gardens in the United States and overseas. Several have been displayed in the Residence and Embassy of the United States of America in Nicosia, Cyprus as part of the Art in the Embassies Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Stern was awarded The Washington Project for the Arts Corcoran (WPA\C) Corner Views Gallery's 'People's Choice Award' for her bronze sculpture entitled "Attitude (Female)." Stern's sculpture was selected from over three hundred entries to be showcased in an exhibition that features twenty-five artists. She won the PeopleŐs Choice award for outstanding work on the basis of a poll of those who viewed the exhibition from October 22 & 29, 2002.

SternŐs sculpture "Sunday Morning" was selected from over five hundred entries to be showcased in an exhibition featuring forty eight artists at the 6th National Juried Competition at Gallery West in Alexandria, Virginia from February 1 to March 2, 2003.

The People's Choice award and juried exhibition selection closely follows successful exhibitions of Stern's work last summer and fall in Washington, D.C., Boston, and in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. They have been exhibited at Neiman Marcus in Washington, D.C. and Boston; The Lenox Gallery of Fine Arts, Lenox, Massachusetts; The Becket Art Center of the Hill Towns, Massachusetts; The Chester Miniature Theatre, Chester, Massachusetts; The Art League and the Torpedo Factory of Alexandria, Virginia; The Glen Echo Art Center in Maryland, and The Memphis (Tennessee) Academy of Arts.

Stern works in clay and wax, and her bronze works are cast at a fine arts foundry in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Her work is also on display year-round at the Lenox Gallery of Fine Arts, 69 Church Street, Lenox, Massachusetts, 02140. Tel: (413) 637-2276.
