View from a Bryce Canyon overlook

Bryce Canyon National Park, UT

2:00 was our checkout time from the campground at Kodachrome Basin, and
it was not a long drive to Bryce Canyon National Park from there.

Next morning we did the usual tourist thing and took photos from some of the
overlooks.

After all the sandstone we'd been seeing at Arches and every place we'd gone
since then, we were surprised to realize that these beautiful freestanding "hoodoos"
were made of limestone. Partly limestone, anyway. I'll quote from a helpful website --
http://www.travelwest.net/parks/brycecanyon/geology.html ...
"The hoodoos at Bryce Canyon are carved in the Claron Formation. Limestone, siltstone,
dolomite and mudstone make up the four different rock types that form the Claron Formation.
Each rock type erodes at different rates. The rock's resistance to erosion is what
causes the undulating shapes of the hoodoos."

Bryce Canyon is actually the eroded edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau rather than a
true "canyon". From down at the Grand Canyon up to Bryce Canyon there are a series of
plateau edges, or "cliffs", which are referred to collectively as the Grand Staircase.
Hence the name "Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument" for the area we'd been
exploring earlier.
