Never tell anyone what an abstract is. For the answer on this one go to the end.
I can remember going to my first photo critique two years ago with a picture of a pretty rose. The comment that sticks in my mind to this day was "technically a nice photo, but it's just a rose - and as I judge I'd be a wealthy person if I had five-cents for every pretty rose photo I've seen." A bit of of a downer at the time, but now the comment makes sense. A rose is a rose is a rose, and tht's why I keep working on different ways to depict flowers. It's relatively easy to make a good looking picture of something pretty (it's the pretty subject that carries the day & not the photographer's skill/art). It's much harder to make a silk purse of a sow's ear (so to speak) - and in the case of this abstract, this hibiscus had seen much better days.
Answer - This is a pink hibiscus (pink petals with a red center - viewed from a distance the overall appearance is pink). It is shot from the edge looking in at the center. Focus point is near the center of the flower with the depth of field causing the edge (red fading to pink in the upper right corner) to become a soft pink blur.
