Unhappy Fisherman

Well, after we left Wasa Lake, we headed for Whitetail Lake (after a brief detour to take a boo at Premier Lake) for some highly anticipated rainbow trout action. The early signs were troubling... we met fisherman heading OUT of the area on a Saturday morning. There were spaces available at the campsite. There was hardly anyone fishing. And we saw basically no trout. We quizzed an oldtimer who had actually caught a couple (in the deepest part of the lake): Q."How's it fishin'?" A. "The shits!" It was. Oh, and to top it off, the starter on my Mercury outboard started acting up, and the battery for the electric motor was running low, so we had to row. Not fun. At Whitetail, we ran into Brent Schlenker, the proprietor of Cypress Hills Fly Fishing. I know his son, Boyd. Anyhow, Brent had just been at Duck Lake, near Creston, BC, a well known bass lake. Didn't sound like Duck was so hot, either... Brent had also just done four days on the Bow below Carseland with John Randolph, editor of Fly Fisherman magazine. Anyhow, we booked it out of Whitetail... the question was: where to now? We settled on Larchwood Lake, where there was allegedly always rising trout. There were, but few and far between. The expression on Frank's face describes the degree of trout angling success we achieved this day. Random (free!) campsites abound at Larchwood, and it's beef stew for supper around a campfire.
