27th

27th Infantry Division:
The New York Division.

When the U.S. entered WW II, the 27th Division was allocated
to the New York National Guard and was in training at Fort
McClellan, Alabama. The Division was Federalized on October
15th, 1940, and participated in the 1941 tri-state maneuvers.
The 27th was one of the first divisions to be sent overseas
arriving in Hawaii on May 21st, 1942, with the mission of
defending the outer islands from Japanese attack.

The shoulder patch worn by the 27th Division is based on a
WW I design approved by AEF on October 29th, 1918. The
letters "NY" on the patch are in the form of a monogram
and represent the state of New York. The seven stars suggest
the constellation Orion and are in honor of the Division's
WW I Commander, Maj. General John F. O'Ryan.
