27th March 2005 - bounty!

This morning we were late up.…..VERY late up. When we looked at the clock it said 11am, which was, in reality noon so we’d been in bed for twelve hours (11pm last night). Our clocks went forward overnight and we hadn’t reset the alarm clock (not that the alarm was set anyway). The phone was ringing and when it stopped, my mobile rang instead. We groaned. We groaned again. DM said ‘how do you feel’ and all I could sum up was ‘lousy’. He said he didn’t feel too bad and thankfully for me got up, wandered downstairs and picked up the phone message from Alan and Dee waiting to hear where we were going to walk the three Border Collies in our joint families.

I stayed put for as long as I could but even I knew in my heart it was time to get up when the doorbell rang. Erica from next door was on the doorstep looking as perky as anything. She shoved this handful of young leeks (our bounty) at DM, laughed at his dressing gown then proclaimed they were all off down the pub. IT’S NOT FAIR. They’d been drinking all day and all night, up till 5am this morning yet they all seemed to be completely un-stupified by it. We’d resisted until 6pm, then gone to bed at 11pm and I felt like I’d been run over by a steam roller.

Fragile of head and nauseous of body, I gently climbed out of bed, had a shower then gave up and lay back down. Two hours later, I was just about alive enough to have some toast, washed down with a cup of coffee and some paracetamol and get my act together to get into the car and go to the Deer Park for a walk with the dogs.

A lot of lounging around later, I cooked supper and got my inspiration for today’s shot from Erica’s leeks. Wouldn’t they look good from their root ends, with the green tops faded out into obscurity? I thought so and here they are, still black from the rich black soil in these parts and only out of the ground for a few hours.

At least Erica and Pete seem to have run out of steam now - we’re beginning to feel decidedly old!!!

Last year I was having so many cameras shoved in my face, I felt like a film star! Two years ago, my fat bottomed girls were trying NOT to get their pics taken!

mmmm I think age has something to do with it! I certainly fade fast and can struggle some mornings - even without a beer or two!!
