Lick Observatory 36" Telescope

Diablo Mountain Range

While we were visiting the Lick Observatory, the destination of our journey, we were able to go on a guided tour of the 36" refracting telescope, at the time of construction the largest in the world, and still holding a #2 ranking over 100 years later. This view is up at the dome, which 12 hours later will be opened up to astronomers working to understand more about our neighbors. Photos from this telescope as well as other sources are available for viewing at the NASA website, they post a new photo every day, click here to check it out.

Thanks Dave, I really left this upset with myself - one of my greatest failures as a photographer is not having a tripod with me more than I do, in this situation I was able to capture this particular shot but missed another dozen that would have better represented this experience had I been better prepared.

It is an abstract as well as a "straight" photograph.
