Death Row

The Death House had two wings of 12 cells each; this is the east wing. On the second floor, there were six more cells, for female prisoners. Prisoners under the sentence of death were housed here until their appeals were heard, and until their execution date was set. Things moved a lot faster back then.

My dad worked on death row for a while, but found it too stressful and asked to be moved. He then worked 16 post for a number of years. He (Larry Schatzel) passed away in 1967.

Myself and about 35 other officers lived in the CCs in 1970 and 1971 awaiting transfer to upstate facilities. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. Now I have been retired for seven years after serving for 32 years.
