Bob Sherwood & Mike Hyde - 1963

Who can ever forget the 6’7” Mike Hyde and Bob Sherwood. That year they were in the tournaments until they made the ‘sweet sixteen’. I can still remember those rousing pep rallies we had in the gym. Old Mr. Bachelder led a cheer that was popular when he was a boy. “Wash ‘em out, Wring ‘em out, Hang 'em on the line, We can beat Attica? any old time.” Funny how something like that sticks in my mind!

Bob Sherwood was lost at sea in a mishap on a tug in the North Pacific. From what Pat Grady told me, “they think a cable swept him over the side.” If anyone could have survived, it would have been him. So sad.

He was such a leader. In football (quarterback) he was an ALL STATE player. He never talked down to us freshman, but was soft-spoken and always helpful. Denny Busek was our up-and-coming quarterback, and I’m sure Bob helped him greatly.

Mike Hyde came into our Ford plant several years ago - but I didn’t get to see him. Bob Bement told me he walked right through my area. Mike works for one of Ford’s suppliers.
