May Day 2026

"Oxalis Stricta" or Yellow Woodsorrow

May Day (May 1) marks the height of spring in many traditions.
Wood sorrel is one of the plants that naturally blooms in spring, often carpeting lawns and woodland edges with bright yellow flowers.
Its timing alone makes it a natural emblem of the season.

May Day traditions celebrate renewal, fertility, and the return of green
Wood sorrel’s: fresh green, clover like leaves-sunny yellow blossoms-delicate, renewing growth
Although native to North America, the clover like leaves echo European May Day symbolism

In Celtic and European spring festivals: trifoliate leaves were symbols of luck, protection, and the sacredness of nature. Plants with heartshaped leaflets were associated with love and joy, both major May Day motifs.. Yellow flowers symbolize sunlight — central to May Day rituals

May Day festivals often honor: the sun’s growing strength - the longer, warmer days - the return of light after winter.
Wood sorrel is often used in springtime folklore.
Across cultures, oxalis is associated with: fresh starts - healing - good fortune - youthful energy
