P2260008 As Time Goes By

Bong Bong Street Bowral NSW view map

While we were waiting for our coffee, I decided to take a quick shot of Bong Bong Street looking down the centre of the Bowral town centre.

In another shot that I processed earlier this morning (but which appears later in this gallery), I made the comment that someone from Bowral of 1964 probably wouldn't even recognise the place in 2022. But upon reflection, that may not be entirely true. Looking at the architecture of the buildings, certainly all of the businesses will have changed since then (or almost all of them), but there hasn't been the "slash and burn" school of urban architecture so common in Sydney, and even to some extent in Wollongong. For example, the large building that we can see near the centre of frame (Springett's Arcade) was built in 1926 and so obviously a person from 1964 would still recognise it. A lot of the shops have been renovated extensively, but certainly in terms of the architecture a lot of the more traditional Bowral seems to survive.

It would be interesting to come back and shoot this again say in 20 years (if I remember to do that) and see what it looks like then. Who knows, by then the seemingly incessant rain may have actually stopped and I'll have a blue sky in the background. I'm not necessarily counting on it, however.
