Enkhuizen is a city where time seems to have stood still here and there, but at the same time it's a city that has undergone enormous development. The center of the city still breathes the atmosphere of the Golden Age. Many beautiful monumental buildings and fortifications have been preserved. The Drommedaris, the Waag building, the Zuiderkerk and the impressive city hall. The 'Boerenhoek', an extension of the city with the still well recognizable ramparts, shows an almost rural character with farms and canals with small bridges.Around the year 1000 there were two settlements on the spot where Enkhuizen now lies: Gommerkerspel, which lay inland, and Enkhuizen, where the fishermen lived. These villages merged together and in 1356 under the name Enkhuizen got the city right. It became one of the most important Zuiderzee cities. Many companies settled in Enkhuizen, including sailmakers, ropemakers and carpentry workshops for building ships.
