The Time Machine (Panasonic RS-845US Quadraphonic 8 Track Player)

Tucson, AZ

It took me a few months after I posted the Pioneer QSX-8000 Quadraphonic Receiver, but I was finally able to find a Quadraphonic 8-Track Player, the Panasonic that is pictured here sitting on top of the Pioneer Quad Receiver. I had three" normal" 8 tracks that I had picked up somewhere along the way, but purchased two quadraphonic demo tapes- one of them is playing during this photo. While it is much more common to see an LP spinning on a turntable these days, and even an occasional cassette playing in a car or home stereo, finding an 8-track playing is extemely unusual, let alone a quadraphonic one. The sound quality is not too bad- about like a cassette without Dolby on, with a little bit wow and flutter, not great dynamic range, but definetly listenable! Quadraphonic 8 tracks had a short run, from 1970-1978, so the tapes are at least 40 years old, which may have a little to do with the sound quality, but all play. There is something magical that happens when the player shifts to the next track- even if it is in the middle of playing something- that makes one go back in time...

I enjoyed my 8 track in the early days...reasonable audio fidelity and sounded better than cassettes, at least quieter....V

Also had a Radio Shack 8-track player that I put in my dad's Scout.

Love it. My first stereo was a combo turntable, 8-track, and tuner. Only stereo, but I did lust for quadraphonic sound. One of my wood shop projects in high school was speaker stands that held my collection of 8-track tapes. Thanks for the memories.

These are magnificent pieces, well-preserved.
I was a fan of these analog tuners during the 80s. At that time I never believed in the future of Stereo-8 and this type of format, but I knew that the sound quality was very good.
Thanks!

Yes, I had an 8 track in my VW beetle, and loved it. That Pioneer quad was the coolest receiver going if you had the $$! V

Wow, that brings back memories. I had an 8-Track player in a car, a 1972 Holden Kingswood. Only ever owned four tapes as far as I can remember. They would just keep on playing jumping tracks in the middle of songs. Thanks for posting!
