The first of two pictures I took of this omnivorous sparrow, feeding on flowers as birds of the species are known to do in spring, here a flower of the Star of Madeira plant, Echium candicans. For the second picture, see https://pbase.com/tgrey/image/169032872 . Anna's Hummingbirds were also feeding on these plants, sucking nectar from the inside of the flowers; the sparrow almost looks as though it too is sucking nectar, but I don't believe its bill is suited for that, and it is probably reaching into the flower to eat the plant material at its base.
