The Gambell boneyards are full of whale, walrus and other bones left there for many centuries by the Yupik native people. Currently the Yupik people dig in the boneyards searching for Walrus ivory, fossilized bone and other bones parts which they use for creating carvings.Weeds grow in the overturned soil of the boneyards providing good hiding places for birds. For that reason many of the best birds are discovered in the boneyards.
