bauxite mine

best viewed at original size

It isn’t all pristine. Far from it.
The reason for Weipa’s existence is that it sits on one of the world’s largest bauxite deposits with an estimated reserve of 1.2 billion tonnes on the active lease alone. Bauxite is the raw material from which aluminium is smelted.
The mine exports more than 27 million tonnes of bauxite per year, just over 10% of the world’s production
This bauxite deposit is shallow, a matter of just several metres near the surface, but extends over a massive area; the mine’s lease is about 2,500 square kilometres and the deposit extends well beyond that.
As well as areas currently being stripped, this photo depicts areas already stripped and being regenerated. But this is only a small portion of the operation.

Stripped and raw, the wounded skin of earth. Regeneration, rewilding, at least attempted reconciliation.

Wow - what a scene - looks as damaging as our oil sands - in that climate tho' the regeneration probably doesn't take too long.

Interesting shot and info. Nice to hear they are regenerating, but is it ever as good as the original environment?

An impressive view. 10% of the world's supply is impressive. I hope that the mined areas are regenerated, so they don't like what brown coal strip mining did to the landscape in the area I am from.

Excellent capture in vivid color, but sad to see the land stripped this way.

Excellent capture of this colorful scene, Don!

So at first it's a tragedy for nature! Do they regenerate all areas?
Although all it's a great image Don V
