New Orleans had a strong presence of German immigrants since the 1850's. They were famous for their beer, and had the largest breweries in the southern United States.
in 1891 the Jackson Brewing Company was formed using the name of the American general Andrew Jackson whose statue was across the street. The brewery closed in 1974 but instead of the building being town down, it was rededicated into a large shopping mall.
