A driver met us at the airport and drove us directly to Hotel Suiza Peruana in Huaraz. We enjoyed our three night stay at the hotel; the room was comfortable, the staff friendly, and it was a short walk to the city center. Norah took this picture from the balcony at the hotel. The view in this picture is very typical of the buildings and landscape in Huaraz (we later had a good overview from a mirador outside of town, part way up the mountainside). The majority of the city was destroyed in the 1970 earthquake, wiping out the traditional and colonial architecture. What took its place upon rebuilding were modern buildlings; practical and economical, but lacking in charm.
