I finally found a pub I love! The Commercial Hotel in Millthorpe outside of Orange, is a pub with a soul thanks to Gerry, hence it's other name, Gerry's@The Commercial Hotel. We discovered Millthorpe on the way to a family funeral in Orange. We discovered Gerry on the way home in what locals refer to as the "top pub". This is a two pub town. More chats with locals revealed both pubs are respected and locals visit both pubs.
Gerry is the sort of Irishman I dream I will find everywhere in Ireland. He is the publican and proprietor. An intelligent, charming man of wit, empathy and a capacity for endless hospitality. He could have been cast as Father Ted, soothing the bad tempered Bishop.
Gerry's pub is missing something. I did not realise this until Gerry pointed around the bar: no pokies, no flat screen TV playing rubbish and no TAB!!! PLUS, mobile phones are banned in the bar. In other words, you can actually carry on a conversation, including with Gerry if you want to. Heaven with interesting beer on tap.
