31st October 2014 - messed up

I sympathise with British parents at Halloween. Somehow, our own unique culture has been trampled to death by American culture and where once we had apple bobbing and pumpkin lantern carving now we have bloody trick or treat. How did that happen? I can’t imagine how mums and dads must feel as they trudge along behind their cherished offspring trying to ensure their safety – it must be a dire task for them. I do wonder when, why and how we allowed our culture to be diminished yet again in favour of Americana. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve nothing against America or its traditions, I just don’t see why we must dispense with our own traditions to become carbon copies of someone else. Why can't we just say "no - we've messed up, we want our own culture back."

We’ve been to visit “family” tonight, my sister and her family along with Alan and Dee and their two girls. We’ve known Alan and Dee for so long they might as well be actual relations, even though we really have no blood ties. We’ve been celebrating DMs last day in his old part-time job before commencement of his new role on Monday. He commented on the way home that we’d spent the evening doing an ancient time-honoured family tradition of a meal followed by charades. I suppose that’s true!

I took this shot at 00.30am and was amused to discover that Dee had rescued a near disaster (no tea lights) by using her best scented candles to light the lanterns! It was a lovely fragrant walk from the car to the house and back again.
