Wow! Chester seems to find some kind of classmates connection wherever he goes.
I do remember Ernest Urata... he lived across from me on Kalanianaole Hwy when we lived there small kid time.
Though I never really knew him, I also remember Douglas Arai.
Just got back from attending a trade show in LV and bumped into Vernon Wong at a downtown hotel-casino.
My wife also saw a few friends, old neighbors and a classmate at the same hotel-casino.
Really small world indeed.
Speaking of LV, here are a few observations from this recent visit.
Recommendation from my daughter and son-in-law who joined us for a few days : Asian BBQ & Noodles.
It's, as the name implies, an asian bbq and noodle shop that has drawn raves.
Kind of an open secret among LV locals, expatrieates and visitors in the know.
Container Park in downtown LV is a new complex just a few blocks east of the Fremont Experience.
A combination of shops, entertainment, and food venues all set up in a ring of converted shipping containers.
Unique and well maintained but not fully occupied by business tenants... hopefully not another Neonopolis.
Neonopolis is still almost void of business tenants and visitors although Denny's now anchors one spot.
The Fremont Experience is flashier than ever what with a new 7-story zip line setup, but boy, ever so tacky.
Can highly recommend the Cosmopolitan Hotel-Casino's buffet, the Wicked Spoon... best I've tried so far.
All in all, LV seems bigger and brighter... maybe not for the better but definitely on the upswing economically.
Gerri Barcenas organized a get-together this week at Maple Garden-Yen King with over three dozen classmates.
Apparently there would have been more but some were out of town or had other engagements at the time.
Seems like a whole bunch of classmates are on the go.
There were a few faces there that some of the others didn't immediately recognize so it was a fun time having
them re-identify and reconnect.
Then too, I guess I really do have very few pics of myself on the photo website as one of the classmates asked another,
" is that what's-his-face that does the blog ? "... or then again, perhaps I really do blend into the background.
There were also a number of revelations overheard while classmates were chatting as they discovered some of their
small connections to each other they didn't know about or had forgotten... being former neighbors way back then,
having common friendships, kids going to the same school or even the same class, etc.
Really should have more of these get-togethers besides reunions as the latter are too far in between... especially now
in our advancing years.
Glad you're getting the blog now Sonny.
Please email me for Sonny Tambungting's full personal email address.
Tremaine, I believe there were three Pats in our '60 class, one male and two females.
Let us know the full name and perhaps someone here on the blog may be able to help

This morning I met Wayne Yamasaki's sister.
I also met a lady who knows Frances Mise Shinjo's son.
We are a large tour group, 54 people.
We have a double deck bus.
I'm finding all kinds of connection with people I know.

You've been traveling so much, I believe there's only about three people left on this earth you haven't met yet.

I was talking to another fellow traveler today.
Turns out he is the brother of a gal I knew in LA about 40 years ago.
When this guys wife heard that I was a 60 grad from Kaimuki, she asked me if I knew her sister Muriel Masumura.
What a small world.

I know/knew Doug.
Haven't seen him since graduation.
It's great that Chester is "bumping" into classmates and their relatives.

I'm currently in Washington.
Had dinner at Bella Italia with Jo-Anne and her friends.
They have a fabulous home on the bluffs overlooking the San Juan de Fuca.
Yesterday the Oosterdam docked at Port Angeles.
I couldn't reach Sahari.
I walked part of Discovery Trail and headed to the ship at the opposite end of the trail.
Got some nice shots of the shipping entering the harbor.
This week we go to Port Townsend to do a photo-shoot.
I like Port Townsend.
If it's a nice day, may go on a whale-watching cruise.
Might take in the Hoh Rain Forest again and Ruby Beach.
Next week, we go to Canada.

The name sounds familiar but I can't get a "picture" of his face.
Will do so after we get back home and have chance to open up my yearbook.
Will tour the Biltmore Estate this morning and have dinner w Doris Toyooka later.

I was talking with one of my fellow travelers.
I've known her for 10 years, but never knew her maiden name.
It turns out to be Arai.
I asked her if she knew a Douglas Arai?
She said that's her younger brother.
Anyone remember him?

Yep, I think we were in the same 6th grade class.
I wouldn't mind living in Henderson for a while because California state income taxes are too much.

I'm on a bus tour.
One of the tour members is our classmate, Ernest Urata.
Does anyone remember him?

He lives in Henderson, NV.

It is cold here in Duluth, MN.
Lake Superior is still frozen.

Add my condolences Gerri, and I'm sure those of our classmates... another great loss... so many and so soon.
Enjoyed helping you celebrate that milestone along with the others who were there.
Sonny, and everyone else who notices the same, the links throughout the blog are all valid but may sometimes
be 'not clickable' due to a formatting quirk that occasionally pops up in my or your email program.
If that happens, 'click-drag' to highlight that entire link, copy it, then paste it into your internet browser.
Got another email from Chester Otani with a link to photo memories from the past.
Although many of you may have seen some them before as I have, they're still a pleasant and nostalgic stroll.
Turns out the online blog where those photos were belongs to Jalna who many of you may remember as that
gal who graciously volunteered to take photos of our Honolulu 2010 reunion for her blog friend, and our
long-ago classmate Betty Violet Chung-Hoon Townsend, who was unable to attend that 50th reunion.
I emailed Jalna for permission to post that link to her blog on this 'email blog' and she not only was fine with
sharing that but also gave another link to share with photos of a really 'old-time' Hawaii.
I have to admit, though I still remember almost all of the scenes in the original link, they are starting to fade
from memory.
I also have to admit that the memories have already faded for most of the scenes in the second really 'old-time'
Hawaii photos.
One quick trivia question: the 1959 Kapahulu Ave scene seems to be about where Ono Hawaiian Food is now
located off to the left in the photo... anyone agree to that ?
Thanks Bing, great stories and memories as usual... felt like I was back in a D.C. Chinese restaurant,
chatting and listening to those great stories, forgetting about time and sometimes even lunch.
I also agree with Marj, Roy... we do miss and never forget classmates/friends who have passed on.
But, as you say, death is a part of life and we should and must move on not only for ourselves but for the others
around us.
Trolleys, streetcars, old-time Hawaii... hopefully more to come Brenda.
Thanks Timmy, your Aunt's trolley fare coin must have been for the electric trolley that ran on metal tracks.
That made me wonder... I honestly can't remember if we had to use fare coins or actual cash coins for the later
rubber-tired trolleys that weren't on metal tracks.
Condolences on your loss too Edwina, we do know what you mean by 'the hurt is still there'... it really never
goes away but time does eventually, though slowly, somewhat heal that hurt.
DISCLAIMER: This is not an 'official KHS '60 newsletter' but merely a voluntarily provided vehicle to pass
on information from the reunion committee, as an aside to the primary purpose of providing a focal point for
your classmate 'memories' and communication. Please refer to the Bulldog Bulletins mailed out by the reunion
reunion committee for definitive 'official' information ( most recent issue dated April 24, 2012 ) .
